Food nourishes the soul as well as the body, and feasts play an integral role in our celebrations. Renowned Ceramic artist Anita Fields folds memories of her celebrations, life and traditions into her work, and she will lead a hands on clay workshop to explore these with the students. With inspiration from the children’s book The Greatest Table: A Banquet to Fight Against Hunger, the class will create clay versions of their favorite foods and table settings – either from beloved memories or from imaginings.

Anita’s work will be featured in “Crafting Ritual & Identity”, Brady Craft Alliance’s Oklahoma invitational exhibition hosted by Living Arts from Aug.3-23, 2012.

We were all thrilled to find one of our very own Tulsa artists, Clayton Keyes, participating in a prestigious invitational at the Bellevue Art Museum in conjunction with the conference! Keyes, a native Tulsan, earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Tulsa, and is currently teaching figurative clay there. He is represented by the MA Doran Gallery in Tulsa.

The show at the Bellevue is entitled “Push Play” and addresses how clay brings out the child in all of us, “freeing the adult to explore and create.” Here’s a photo of Clayton’s work and his artist statement: 

“Omens and Prodigies is a testament to the nature of my feelings about destructive treatment of our ecology and Human progenies’ collective future therein. As I have created this body I have delved into notions of impermanence, stewardship, and legacy. Child imagery, hunted and incapacitated animals, and the emotions of sympathy, conflict, humiliation, excess, and turmoil characterize the work. Here, I have rendered children who mourn the passing of their animal counterparts, children who question their own role in the hunt, and even a child of extravagance and wastefulness, who delights in dispatching a rabbit for mere self embellishment. I set these children to act as omens, to caution against prodigality, and to be present as a reminder for whom our great excesses may do harm.

The putti itself addresses the frivolity with which we humans often lead our lives. Our creature comforts, being most important to us, can blind us to the plight of other beings or even the cost of such comforts. The piece Bougie Putti depicts an upper class child possibly of the 17th century bourgeoisie, who has dispatched a hare for the purpose of a little lip color.  He reminds us to find what matters most, to understand that which doesn’t really matter, and to remain aware of the situations others less fortunate are currently experiencing.”

Thank you to everyone that came out to the BCA Member’s Only event last Sunday for a special presentation about Black on Black & White at the Philbrook….

For those that missed it, or those that liked it enough they want more, tomorrow (March 15th) is Philbrook’s 3rd Thursday and will feature a lecture entitled “Beyond Black on Black: Maria Martinez and Her Family Legacy.” It starts at 6 PM in the Patti Johnson Wilson Hall. Says Philbrook,

“Pottery and pastels prevail in this evening in honor of Maria Martinez and her family. We’ll start off the evening looking at Maria Martinez’s legacy with a pastel demonstration from Jarrod Da, an artist who is also Maria’s great-grandson. Then author Charles King will delve deep in a presentation exploring the work of Maria Martinez, her family – including grandson Tony Da – and her continuing legacy.”

At 2 pm, Christina Burke will be giving a private behind-the-scenes tour of the Black on Black & White exhibition, followed by a lecture with Jeff Wells on some of the processes used in the exhibit.

The Tulsa World article, written by Kim Brown Averill, told the story of Anna Sullivan and Jan Hawks and their collaboration to create Anna’s wedding dress. These two fantastic Tulsa artists met while serving on the Board of the Brady Craft Alliance and their partnership produced a beautiful dress for Anna’s wedding!
