M. Teresa Valero will be the guest curator for this exhibit and all media welcome! The exhibition will open on Feburary 12th with a reception from 11:30 am – 2 pm.

Jean Ann is a fiber and surface design studio artist working in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She says that her work is ”… an exploration of unseen, sometimes microscopic, images in nature. My use of materials is often non traditional. I especially like using soft materials to depict hard objects.” Find more examples of her work here.

We are so pleased to introduce you to Emily Kern, Executive Director of the Brady Craft Alliance!

Says Emily, “This is such an exciting time to be a part of the arts in Tulsa, and I’m honored to work with the Brady Craft Alliance to make Tulsa the premier destination for fine craft. By dedicating exhibit, retail, and education space exclusively to craft, we will be a resource unlike any other in Tulsa for artists, educators, and the community. Together, we will not only advance the process, product, and history of craft but will raise the profile of the arts in Oklahoma.”

Emily Kern grew up in the Tulsa area and has lived in Oklahoma most of her life where she has been studying art since she was a student in Sapulpa. She received a degree in Fine Arts from Oklahoma State University where she thrived as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. While a student at OSU, she won numerous scholarships, wrote and was awarded several grants, was chosen to participate in a competitive internship at Universal Limited Art Editions in New York, interned with Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, and was featured as a spotlight artist at Momentum Tulsa. After completing her art degree, she immediately began graduate studies at OSU’s Spears School of Business where she completed a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and was honored as the program’s Outstanding Graduate Student. During that time, she founded her own business, Nickel Lane LLC, which is a social venture that partners with micro-lending organizations and artisans in Oklahoma and developing countries to acquire handmade, fair trade products, providing a fair wage along the way. Emily is also an experienced curator, creating exhibits featuring the works of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Kiki Smith, and Amy Cutler. Prior to receiving her position with the Brady Craft Alliance, she was honored to serve as the co-chair of Momentum Tulsa 2011.

Emily is passionate about art, passionate about Oklahoma, and passionate about organizations that make a difference in their communities through creative enterprise. What could be a better fit than to work with the Brady Craft Alliance to see Tulsa continue to become not only the premier destination for fine craft in the United States but also the kind of place that we all want to call home!

So many fantastic discussions came from her lecture on Saturday, October 1st at the Gilcrease Museum. Despite a weekend full of activity, we had great attendance and enjoyed seeing her examples of great art collections around the country.

Saturday’s brunch at the Philbrook museum gave Brady Craft Alliance patrons and members the chance to have one-on-one conversations with Jane. And as a surprise to everyone, we were able to tour a fantastic private art collection right here in Tulsa!

We so appreciate everyone that came out to these events and want to extend a special thank you to Jane for coming out to visit us in Tulsa.

“Living With Craft” Lecture and Cocktail Reception

4-7PM, Free and Open to the Public

This event will give the public an opportunity to learn all about fine craft – its definition, how modern artists are interpreting craft materials, and craft’s relationship to fine art. Jane has a unique perspective on this given her lengthy history and breadth of experience in the art world.

This talk will appeal to fine craft newcomers as well as collectors wanting to learn from Jane’s expertise in the field. The talk, “Living With Craft” will do just that – help those new to craft and those seasoned craft aficianados find new ways to appreciate fine craft in their daily lives.

On Sunday, Jane Sauer will dive into her experiences in the art world both as an artist and a gallerist in Santa Fe.  This intimate conversation will give BCA members a fresh perspective on both sides of the art world. Attendees may even have a chance to tour behind the scenes at Philbrook….check back often for more details!
