Margaret Roach Wheeler Style Show
June 10th 2011
In conjunction with FiberWorks 2011 (sponsored by the Fiber Artists of Oklahoma), the Brady Craft Alliance will be hosting a digitally enhanced style show by Margaret Roach Wheeler. She is a nationally recognized textile artist and designer based in Joplin, MO, of Chickasaw and Choctaw descent. Wheeler merges her education in fine arts with her Native heritage to weave contemporary, expressive and elaborate garments based on traditional clothing. Her work has been exhibited in museums across the U.S. and has been featured in several prestigious fashion shows.
Says Myra Block, Chair of the BCA, “Featuring Wheeler’s amazing fiber creations is a natural adjunct to the fiber exhibition. In fact, there will be one of these creations on display at the opening of the exhibition on June 3rd at Living Arts. This is all a part of fulfilling our mission to encourage the Art of Craft and the Brady Craft Alliance is proud to be a supporter of the Fiber Artists of Oklahoma and their FiberWorks 2011 Exhibition.”
Please join us on June 10th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Living Arts of Tulsa for a cocktail reception and the digitally enhanced style show of Margaret Roach Wheeler’s wonderful textile creations. This event is free and open to the public.
Vision Makers 2010
September 11th
This exhibition has been showcasing the work of Oklahoma fine craft artists for over twenty two years. 1988 was the show’s inaugural year, organized under the auspices of the Oklahoma Arts Council and its visionary director, Betty Price. Premiering both at Tulsa’s Philbrook Museum and Oklahoma City’s Kirkpatrick Center, it included Philbrook’s Director Marcia Manhart as juror.
Solely in Tulsa the next year, VisionMakes was held at the Bank of Oklahoma Tower. The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC) then assumed sponsorship of VisionMakers and held the next 16 exhibitions in various venues throughout the state.
It is with great pleasure that twenty-two years later, the Brady Craft Alliance returns VisionMakers to Tulsa, making it our signature event! Please join us for the Artist’s Critique (4-6 pm) and Opening Reception (6-9 pm) on September 11th at
Living Arts of Tulsa
This year’s curator is Jeannine Falino, Curator from the New York Museum of Art and Design. She is extremely well respected in the field, and is considered an authority on craft. Currently, Ms. Falino is preparing a touring exhibition on mid-twentieth-century craft in all media, entitled Making it Real: American Studio Movement 1945-1969. Falino lectures extensively on 20th century studio crafts and on silver and jewelry from the colonial era to present. She was also the lead author and editor for Silver of the Americas, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Vol. 3 (2008); a co-curator for Artistic Luxury: Fabergé – Tiffany – Lalique (Cleveland Museum of Art, 2008), and curator for Edge of the Sublime: Enamels by Jamie Bennett, (Fuller Craft Museum, 2008). She will be present for the Artist’s Critique and talk briefly about her choices at the reception on September 11th.
